Mario Wiki: "This game was originally to be called Super Mario FX, using the FX Chip and was also being planned for the Super Nintendo. Luigi may have also been said to been playable in the FX, but was scrapped for unknown reasons. In the Beta version, it would've had a numbered health bar instead of the pointed one. Many stages and bars would be different. The Thwomps would also have a scarier look and Mario would have a different jump (one that let him spin around after a triple jump in a way similar to the result of being hit by a Tweester in Shifting Sand Land). Early screenshots also show a tan Cheep-Cheep, not found in the final game. Other screenshots show a Pokey with interestingly different graphics, a skinnier Penguin, and Princess Peach's Castle was different and also used darker shades of color and Lethal Lava Land is different. Mario was voiced differently (possessing a screechy, childlike voice rather than his current Italian accent), and Bowser sounded more tiger-like. There was also going to be a Blargg, which is still in the game's data, that would appear in the Lethal Lava Land stage. Also, in the beta, Big Boo held a key instead of a Star inside of him. The purpose of the keys ware to unlock a variety of the various doors in Big Boo's Haunt - there was even a "key counter". Thirty-two levels were planned for the game, but only fifteen of them made it into the final product. In the game, there are small and large bullys, using two models; small and large bully models, a related species called "Chill Bully" appeared in Course 10: Snowman's Land, it too had a small and large model but only the large model was used, its possible that there were going to be small and large like in Lethal Lava Land but was scrapped. Water mines (with graphics identical to spick bombs) were going to in a water level, this can be seen trough a hack. Yoshi egg graphics are stored in the games code, this too can be seen through a simple hack. A debug function stored in the game is the "level select", in this, some of the courses have different names and some symbols can only be seen in the Japanese game. eg. Whomps Fortress is simply called "Mountain"."
Unseen 64: "Super Mario 64 was probably one of the first titles developed for Nintendo’s 64 bit console. There are rumors of a 3D prototype existing on the SNES using the systems Super FX chip, but this prototype was kept behind closed doors, so no images of it exist. It’s safe to assume that this would have been an isometric platforming adventure, and played similarly to the older games of the Mario name. With Nintendo’s prototype next-generation console, “Project Reality”, the game went from a FX chip prototype to a 3D beta on the 64-bit new hardware. The SNES prototype was never seen or heard about again. Even with this project on the Nintendo 64, original designs still stuck to the isometric viewpoint. Like with the older games, this one had players taking their chances jumping form platform to platform to reach the end of a level. As the game went on, this concept was kept intact for the game’s boss stages were the player would fight bowser. This game was officially presented to the public in November of 1995. During its development Nintendo released a lot of images, some of which were from a playable demo. This was very important since it allowed people to take photos, and record videos which we can look back at to see how much the game has changed from the beta to now. The beta version of Mario 64 appeared to be very similar to the final: Many of the levels were similar seeing only minor changes. Some of the biggest changes were made to the hub world which didn’t seem very much like a castle to begin with. Changes can also be seen in the lives – stars – coin counter in the HUD, as well as Mario’s health bar which is an image of his head in the final version. Some changes are noticeable like different textures, and colors. Bowser also sports some different textures. We can also see the castle interior is dark blue with some moons on the columns. The inside of the castle was very different in the beta. We do not know if the doors here are different than the ones in the final, or if they lead to the same places, or if they were simply place holder images. One of the more interesting images had Mario in a snowy level with penguins, and a different background that isn’t found anywhere in the final game. It is also noted that the stars used to be 2D in design. In conclusion, the face texture for the yellow desert enemy was really scary."

Beta Objects:

Beta Key- This key was used in the beta v3/Pre-released, but was removed for uknown purposes. Many people claim that there is only one key and if you take it from Big Boo, Luigi will be unlocked. In fact, some people have made rumors that Luigi could be unlocked if you found a secret course and collected the 6 Golden Keys. THE LUIGI RUMORS ARE FAKE. HE IS NOT IN THE FINAL GAME. The 6 Golden keys theory is that if you collect them all, you'll unlock a door or collect a star, or open a key hole like in Super Mario World. Some people have hacked the game for the key behaviour. For example, Dudaw and Yoshielectron have found these beta keys. Ask them if you want them for the behaviour. I have the behaviour, but you have to ask Dudaw or Yoshielectron for the code (You can use a hack to access this).

Beta Red Shell- This red shell was in the beta game, and was discovered by Staxxon and Frauber. There are 2 theories what these are used for. The Mario Kart style or a koopa shell. Frauber has recreated the Mario Kart Red Shell. (Can maybe be accessed using a hack).

Beta Flower- If you use a texure editor (Not TT64), you'll find the beta flower in Lethal Lava Land. There are theories what this was used for. A Fire Flower, a 1-up mushroom, or a power up, like those of Super Mario 64 DS (Can't be accessed using a hack).

Beta Water Mines- These are the same kind of Spike Balls used in the Bowser Battles. They were in Dire, Dire, Docks, which was the only water level for Super Mario 64 in the beta. This is proof for it can be seen in some videos or if Mario jumps into the Spike in any of the Bowser Battles, They'll Blow up (Can be accessed using a hack).

Beta Blargg- This enemy is seen in Super Mario World. It was also an unfinished model, with unfinished textures, such as no eyes or mouth, or anything, in Super Mario 64, another hint that Super Mario 64 was original Super Mario World 2
(This can easily be accessed using a gameshark code, a Hex Editor, or TT64).

Luigi- The famous Luigi was in the Beta. He was removed due to no more room. He was originally supposed to be player 2, but removed. It can be accessed, but it would take extremely complicated hacking to get him. You would have to be more advanced than Starxxon. Another way to get Luigi is to first using TT64, change Mario's mustache and M on hat to L, change the colors, mute Mario's voice, and using Rice's Video Plugin to change the hud. Ta-Dah! Still not happy? Want to change the model? Go to textures, clicck the plaque texture, and in Mario's size, Copy and paste this: L Is Real, and then, hit enter.
type

Snow balls- They were in the beta game, and they acted as Metal Balls or Bullet Bills (Can be accessed using a hack).

Yoshi Eggs- As in Super Mario World, these Yoshi eggs were a hatching graphic. The (probably) goal was to colloect them like the 8 red coins.

The Differences Between the Final Game and the Beta:

The HUD was different, Mario's health meter was different, Different Letters, The Beta had only one floor, Boos had Black Eyes and a red with teeth only mouth, The picture of Peach was a Clock, Mario had Darker Hair, His voice was higher, more childish, and adult like at some points, like when he was being burnt by Bowser, The Thwomps were darker blue and had meaner eyes, the stars were 2D, Bowser had Blue Eyes (Only in V2), Bowser's shell was different, Bowser in the Dark World was the only Bowser with clouds instead of the dark features, the Cheep-Cheeps were either tan, the same color, or Green (In the Beta, The Water Made everything blue, so no-one's sure what color the cheep-cheeps is.
